AI Agents
You've heard the word everywhere. AI agents. Agentic AI. Autonomous agents. It sounds like science fiction. It's not. It's already running inside products you use.
Here's what it actually means.
A regular AI — the kind you chat with — responds. You ask, it answers. That's it. The conversation ends, nothing happens in the world. It's a very smart text box.
An agent does things.
Give an agent a goal and it figures out the steps, executes them in sequence, checks its own work, and adjusts when something goes wrong. It doesn't wait for you to tell it what to do next. It decides.
A simple example. You tell an agent to research your competitors, summarize what they found, write a report, and email it to your team by Friday. A regular AI gives you a wall of text you then have to act on yourself. An agent opens a browser, searches, reads pages, takes notes, writes the report, and sends the email. You told it the destination. It figured out the route.
That's the difference. Response versus action.
Agents are being embedded into everything — customer service systems, coding tools, HR platforms, financial software. When you interact with a company's support chat and it actually resolves your issue without a human touching it, that's an agent. When your IDE writes, tests, and fixes code while you watch, that's an agent.
The capability is real and it's moving fast. But so is the risk.
An agent that can take actions can take the wrong actions. An agent with access to your email can send emails you didn't authorize. An agent connected to your calendar can schedule meetings you didn't approve. An agent plugged into your company's systems can delete files, move money, or expose data — not because it wants to, but because someone told it to, or because it misunderstood what it was supposed to do.
The security question with agents isn't just "is the AI safe." It's "what can this thing actually touch, and what happens if it gets it wrong."
The principle that applies here is least privilege — the same one that governs human access in any secure organization. An agent should only have access to what it needs to complete its specific task. Nothing more. An agent that books travel doesn't need access to your financial systems. An agent that summarizes documents doesn't need to send emails.
Every capability you give an agent is a capability that can be exploited, misused, or triggered by mistake.
An AI agent is only as trustworthy as the permissions you gave it and the goal you set — which means before you deploy one, the most important question isn't what it can do, but what you're letting it touch.
